THE BUYER GUIDE
What is field service management software?
Field service management software helps service companies organize requests, schedules, people, jobs, and paperwork. Here is what to look for when you compare systems.

A simple definition
Field service management, often called FSM, is the work of running jobs away from the office. For an HVAC or plumbing company, that covers calls, appointments, travel, service history, estimates, parts, invoices, and follow-up. Good software connects these activities so the team works from the same information.

The everyday jobs it should handle
The first test is not a long list of features. Ask whether someone can book a job, move it to another technician, send new instructions, review work completed, and find the invoice without switching between spreadsheets and messages. Use a real scenario from your own business when you evaluate a product.

What small and large companies need
A small shop may care most about the schedule, clean customer records, and getting paid. A larger company needs branch permissions, consistent processes, exception reports, territories, audit records, and a plan for moving data. Complexity should appear only where it helps a real workflow.

How to compare vendors fairly
Request a live demonstration of the exact tasks your staff performs every week. Ask about migration costs, onboarding, mobile limitations, payment fees, API access, support hours, and what happens if you leave. Write down promised capabilities and their release status. Sales claims are not a replacement for a hands-on test.
Example to try: Example: At 9:00 a.m., a dispatcher reschedules a plumbing repair. The technician should receive the new time, the customer should get the correct expectation, and the office should see the change. This is a useful demo test.

A practical checklist
- List your top three job types and have each vendor demonstrate one end to end.
- Ask whether mobile work needs an internet connection at every step.
- Compare quoted seat fees, setup work, transaction charges, support, integrations and exit costs.
- Export a sample customer with multiple service locations before signing a multi-year agreement.
Good questions
What else would
you like to know?
Is FSM the same as CRM?
CRM focuses on customer relationships and sales activity. Field service management also covers scheduling, dispatch, completing jobs, and operational records. Many products combine both.
Do I need FSM software if we use spreadsheets?
Not every small company needs a complex platform. Evaluate your missed handoffs, double entry, scheduling changes, and unpaid jobs before deciding.
What should I ask during a demo?
Bring one real job type and ask the vendor to walk through booking, dispatch, field notes, invoicing, reporting, and export options.
